Your diesel automobile isn’t perfect, although it’s pretty close. Village Diesel Works advises that you may end up with one or more of the common diesel engine problems below, but you shouldn’t worry if you do because we can fix the engine for you. Let’s talk more about diesel engine problems.
Hard to Start
Diesel drivers know that their engines will crank a few more times than gasoline engines do before they start. This doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with the engine; this is normal. If the engine has difficulty firing up, however, after the cranks, the engine is in dire need of service.
Lagging Engine
Generally, if your diesel engine is losing power, you’ve got a fuel problem. This could be a clogged fuel filter or an issue with the fuel injectors. Power loss in a diesel engine can also be caused by a loose throttle linkage. The engine will also lose power if it is excessively lubricated.
Contaminated Fuel
Gasoline is thinner than diesel fuel, so it doesn’t get contaminated as easily. If your diesel fuel is contaminated, it could damage the engine. There are a handful of things that can contaminate diesel fuel, and they include glycol and soot as well as water.
Excessive Exhaust
You may see a puff or two of black exhaust coming out of the tailpipe when you press down on the accelerator, but you shouldn’t see a ton of exhaust. If you do, there’s a rich fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. A clogged air filter can cause this type of fuel mixture.
Oxidized Oil
If your diesel automobile has been sitting for months without being driven, you may have oxidized oil in the engine. This means the oil has filled with tiny air bubbles. It’s crucial that you change your diesel engine’s oil before you drive the vehicle to avoid serious engine damage.
Too Much Noise
Finally, although diesel engines make more noise than gasoline engines do, the noise should not be overbearing. If your diesel engine is extremely loud, there is a problem in the engine that needs to be addressed. This is particularly true if the engine is knocking, grinding, or squealing.
